If your iPhone is showing the symbol to charge your phone doesn't go away when you plug in a charger then you may need a new charge port.

Charging cables can also go bad so try testing a different one on your phone.

Why is it your charging port can stop functioning properly? Very often the issue can be as simple as lint and dirt caught in your charging port, and when you plug your charger in compacts it deeper in the port. However, the issue could be caused by a damaged or after-market charger. If the voltage being sent to your iPhone is not the correct amount due to a charger not working properly, then you could have a serious issue.
